The goal of this project is to transform The Wharf District Parks of downtown Boston into an urban oasis in a concrete desert, serving as a lung for the city and sewing the city back together over the gash created by 1-93, the six lane highway that cuts through the heart of the city. The design includes vibrant retail areas, including outdoor/indoor eating areas, restaurants, cafes, bars, shops, even retail push carts and kiosks. It also provides flexible winter use, such as a skate rink, and features sitting facilities, allowing people to enjoy daily entertainment, conversation, a lunch break, or people watching. A key organizing principle was to create a place filled with life but on a pedestrian-friendly scale, drawing diverse groups of people. The design presents the Wharf District Parks as a reinterpreted and meaningful place where rich layers are unfolded and revealed.
